Punching bag stand

Punching bag stand – to buy or to make one?

Think you need a punching bag stand and wonder if you could save some money whilst still getting a decent kind of a punching bag stand? This site was made exactly for you.
So you got yourself or wish to get yourself a punching bag.  Like most martial artists dream of having their own little spot or even an own little dojo setup, with a punching bag stand on one side and some makiwaras and other fitness equipment on the other side. The reason for this is to have a special, almost sacred, place to train whilst at home. Strengthening your knuckles and feet is vital in any martial where there is actual sparring involved. A good way of doing this is to get yourself a punching bag stand along with a decent ( leather ) punching bag .

There are many different types of punching bags. There are the hanging types, that just hang from the ceiling. There are also self-standing bags which usually have a water or sand base on the bottom to keep them from falling over. Last but not least we have the ones hung to a bag stand which is basically a bunch of steel rods connected together to form a solid self standing foundation from which the punching bag will be hung. Afcourse there will be issues regarding this but the whole point of a gym is to have a great big place in which to train in.

A gym at home is more or less a hobby or just an extra workout. Even a decent sized garage is not the ideal place for practicing martial arts (especially the ones that use a lot of kicks and movement). Just the thought of hitting a wall or the low ceiling with your leg or head is not pleasant. The above mentioned are just options when you have already decided to buy a bog of some sort and practice.

Pros and cons of making a punching bag stand

You could make the stand yourself if you are a craftsman and steel bending and drilling is your thing, but it could be a waste of time if the end result will be a toppling mass of steel ending up on the floor, in a wall or even on something fragile like let`s say a window. The alternative is to buy a bag stand already made that needs just a simple assembly and you are on your way. There are plenty of stores online that can supply the stands. Prices could range anywhere from 100$ to a thousand bucks for a decent set. Keep in mind this does not include the bag itself.

One of many ideas for a DIY (Do It Yourself) punching bag stand?

If however you should give it a go, seeing that you figured out there is no way your ceiling can hold the weight of your bag or that a self-standing bag is too expensive, you could try to eliminate costs with some basic geometry and basic home improvement techniques.

When you plan out your little fighting/training area ( usually this would be a garage or the attic ) you should check if there is any corner of the room that doesn’t have windows next to it, but does however have a strong ( concrete ) wall on each side. Mount a steel bracket on each side in order to put at least a 6 foot steel bar between them so that the bar is forming a regular triangle with the walls.
This insures that the bag hung from this homemade stand would never be too close to a wall, so there is little risk of injuring yourself whilst punching and kicking the bag.

For extra protection you could also put 2 more bracket near the centre of the steel rod and hang the punching bag in between the brackets in order to prevent it from swiveling left and right. As mentioned before keep in mind that this kind of construction must be used with caution, because the adrenaline flow when someone is “in the zone” is huge and sooner or later you will be smashin your foot or hand in the wall or any other obsticle in the way. Noone wants that to happen of course.

Train hard and stay safe.
